just what Abby needed
The summer of 2010 Abby went to Camp Anew for the first time. Her father passed away in January of 2009 from heart failure. His death in our home was very traumatic for everyone, but especially Abby. When a friend told us about Camp Anew I knew it would be just what Abby needed. The activities and sharing time there allowed her to express her grief in a healthy way, and the connection with so many other children who had experienced loss was vital for Abby's ability to cope with her own loss. She enjoyed every part of Camp Anew, from the horseback riding to the art projects to the games and circle times. She still sleeps with the memory pillow she made from Camp Anew every night. Abby is excited to be able to come back to Camp Anew again this year, and I am excited because I know it will bring even more healing to her heart. ~ June Castonguay
So what to say about Camp Anew?
When our daughter went back to school after her younger brother died, one of the saddest things I heard her say was, "My friends don't understand me anymore." But at Camp Anew, the friends she made DID understand her, because they were all in a similar place--trying to make sense of the loss of someone important to them. Camp gave her a place to talk about her brother, her memories, her feelings, her faith, and her questions without feeling out of place. There, she was just like everyone else: sad, confused, hurt, angry, scared--just like all the other kids around her. She says: Camp Anew has meant a lot to me.It's helped me through bad times in my life. ~ Dawn Burgess
